Our story begins with Coatlique, the earth goddess, who discovers a ball of feathers that leaves her pregnant. Her children, led by moon goddess Coyolxauhqui, refuse to believe her and vow to kill her, as a goddess could only give birth once. As they prepare their assault, Coatlique gives birth to Huitzilopochtli, the Aztec god of war and sun, who springs forth fully grown and armed. With a fire-snake, he beheads and dismembers his sister Coyolxauhqui, hurling her head into the sky to become the Moon, then slays his four hundred brothers who become the stars. This battle replays daily: Huitzilopochtli (the sun) chases Coyolxauhqui (the moon) across the skies by day, whilst battling through the underworld by night.
